 Vikram Ambalal Sarabhai was an Indian scientist. He is regarded as the father of India's space program. In 1962 he received the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Medal. In 1966, he was awarded Padma Bhushan and in 1972 with Padma Vibhushan (posthumously). He founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in 1947 which is known as the cradle of space sciences in India. Sarabhai began a project for the invention and launch of an Indian satellite. As a result, the first Indian satellite, Aryabhata, was put in orbit in 1975 from a Russian cosmodrome.
