When carbon monoxide combines with haemoglobin the patient dies due to suffocation.
The haemoglobin misinterprets carbon monoxide to be oxygen and thereby it carries carbon monoxide and leaves behind oxygen. In addition, the carbon monoxide has a greater affinity toward haemoglobin leading to the formation of carboxy haemoglobin.
Thus the organs of the body get filled with carbon monoxide instead of oxygen leading to the death of the person.
