kalamkari literally means, Kalam - pen & kari - work, i.e., art work done using a pen. Vegetable dyes are used to colour the designs applied on cloth. The art of painting using organic dyes on cloth was popular in several parts of India, but this style of Kalamkari flourished at Kalahasti (80 miles north of Chennai) and at Masulipatnam The artists use a bamboo or date palm stick pointed at one end with a bundle of fine hair attached to this pointed end to serve as the brush or pen. The dyes are obtained by extracting colours form parts of plants - roots, leaves along with mineral salts of iron, tin, copper, alum, etc., which are used as mordants.
Kalamkari is a hand-painted or block printed cotton textile. It means Kalam:Pen, Kari:Craftmanship, which means a craft with a pen. It is believed that it originated in Andhra Pradesh.

1. Piece of cloth
2.Kalamkari Batches
3.( 3-D) outliner - Sandal color
4.Kundhan stones
5. Small Mirror
6.Fabric Glue
How to Do:
Take the kalamkari batch that you need to use, apply the fabric glue on the backside of the batch. Then, stick it on the piece of cloth or whatever material you want to be get designed. Leave it for 20 minutes. After that, with the help of 3 -D outliner draw lines in that design. leave that for 1 hour. Apply glue according to your taste in that designs as dots. In that dots apply chamki, kundhan stones and normal stones. Leave this for one hair to dry. Even if you press the stone and the glue spreads, it will not be shown after it get dry's out. So.., Don't worry. you can do this even in saree pallus, saree borders, blouse and even in salwar materials. Try this out.
