CASE STUDY BASED QUESTION:

Anjali wanted to eat rice and kidney bean (rajmah). She requested her mother to cook the

same on next day. At night her mother took a cup of kidney beans and put them in a

container having some water and the kept the container covered overnight. Next day it was

observed that the kidney beans got swollen and were ready to be cooked.

(i) What is this phenomenon due to which kidney beans got swollen is known as?

(ii) Explain the process involved in the above mentioned case.

(iii) Name any two such activities that your mother performs at home which follows the same

phenomena as mentioned above.​

i) osmosis.

ii)the kidney beans got swollen due to the absorption of water around it. If the medium surrounding the cell has a higher water concentration than the cell, meaning that the outside solution is very dilute, the cell will gain water by osmosis. Such a solution is known as a hypotonic solution

iii) leaving cheak peas in water overnight,soya chunks in water etc.
