The panchayati raj is a South Asian political system mainly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. It is the oldest system of local government in the Indian subcontinent. The word "panchayat" literally means "assembly" (ayat) of five (panch) wise and respected elders chosen and accepted by the local community.Panchayats can reach where the bureaucrats can’t. India has accepted this fact with grace. Each village has its own set of issues, which only the locals can understand. Members of a Panchayat are far more cognizant of the region-specific problems, and thus they are capable of taking a more informed decision in favour of the people of their village or tehsil. Moreover, this mechanism of local self-governance acts as a force to counter the dominance of a particular group or caste in a village.
