Solution. Let there are b benches and s students in the class.

  • 1st condition. If three students sit on a bench, one student will be left.
  • i.e., s = 3b + 1 .....(i)

  • 2nd condition. If four students sit on a bench, one bench will be left.
  • i.e., s = 4 (b - 1)
  • or, s = 4b - 4 .....(ii)

  • Equating from (i) and (ii), we get
  • 3b + 1 = 4b - 4
  • or, b = 5
  • Then, s = 3 (5) + 1 = 15 + 1 = 16

Answer. Thus there are 16 students and 5 benches in class X.
