A longitudinal wave is produced in a medium. The wave travels with a speed of 50cm/s. and the frequency of the wave is 40Hz. What is the minimum separation between the consecutive compressions in the medium.

Answer :

TPS
speed of wave (u)= 50cm/s
frequency (f)= 40hz
wavelength = w

speed = w×f
⇒ 50 = 40×w
⇒w = 50/40 = 1.25cm

Since minimum separation between consecutive compressions is equal to the wavelength of wave, answer is 1.25cm.
v = velocity of the wave = frequency * wavelength
 wavelength =  50 cm /sec / 40 Hz   = 1.25 cm

The separation between the consecutive compressions in the medium is called the wavelength.  Hence, it is 1.25 cm.
