Jyotirao Phule and his wife were pioneers in educating women and the 'lower' castes in India. This helped to remove 'untouchability' from the caste system and to prevent 'lower' caste people from being exploited by 'higher' caste people. Phule educated his wife and opened the first school for girls in India in August 1848.
